Tom Landry, football player and legendary coach of the Dallas Cowboys, was inducted into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 1999, which included running great Wilma Rudolph and baseball star Tony Gwynn.
Tom Landry played defensive back for the New York Giants from 1949-1955, during which time he was selected to one Pro-Bowl. His real glory came out of his 29 seasons as Dallas Cowboys’ head coach between 1960 and 1988. In 1966 the Cowboys made it to the Super Bowl. The successful season kicked of the incredible 20 straight season streak that followed. During these 20 seasons, Landry guided his team to two Super Bowl wins, five NFC Championship wins, and 13 Division Titles, establishing himself as the coach with the third most wins of all time (270) and the most playoff wins (20). Landry is also credited with inventing the 4-3 defense.
Landry and his wife founded the Lisa Landry Childress Foundation in honor of their daughter who died of liver cancer. The organization spreads awareness regarding the need for organ donors and programs that facilitate transplants. Tom Landry died in February of 2000 from Leukemia.
