Pat McCormick, the first athlete to win gold medals in both the springboard and platform diving events at two Olympic Games, mounted a team of volunteers to improve the lives of underprivileged children in California. McCormick was inducted into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 1996, which included Olympic speeskater Bonnie Blair, and distance runner Kip Keino.
Pat McCormick went to her first Olympic games at the age of 18. Showing tremendous potential as a young diver, she came in fourth and missed a medal by only a hundredth of a point. McCormick went on to take gold in both the 3 meter springboard and the 10 meter platform at Helsinki in 1952, and repeated in both events at Melbourne in 1956. In the subsequent years she received countless honors, among them the American Women Athlete of the Year and an induction as the first woman ever in the U.S. Swimming Hall of Fame.
Following her retirement from diving, McCormick began the Pat McCormick Educational Foundation, through which she and fellow volunteers work with underprivileged children in California to help fund and motivate them to pursue their dreams. She also works with children and as a motivational speaker.
